RYA Day Skipper

This course is an introduction to the theoretical skills needed to skipper a small craft. It provides basic seamanship and an introduction to navigation and meteorology. It is often the first course in the RYA National Cruising Scheme that people attempt.

Course type:

The ideal course for those with little or no experience, or some seagoing experience but no formal theory background. No pre-course knowledge is required.

Successful students will be issued with an RYA ‘Day Skipper Shorebased Course Completion Certificate’.

The next course will be run as a mixture of pre learning using online modules from the essential navigation course and classroom sessions.

The essential navigation modules can be completed with 16 hours and paced to suite you but would recommend this is spread out over a month ideally starting in September 2023

Followed by three evening zoom webinars on the 10th, 17th and 24th October 2023 at 19:15

Then the classroom sessions on the 4th November 2023 and 9th December 2023 in the Training Room at Staunton Harold Sailing Club to complete the course

The course will cost £375 and includes the charts, course book and almanac. Plotting equipment will cost an additional £25.

Equipment needed:

The course pack includes the training charts, almanac and the assessment pack. You will also need chart plotting instruments which are available for you to buy at the start of the course.

Some syllabus headings:

Seamanship: nautical terms, ropework, anchoring, safety at sea, Mayday calling, preventing collisions at sea, avoiding pollution.

Meteorology: shipping forecast terms, sources of information, basic knowledge of pressure systems, using meteorology in passage planning.

Navigation: chart work, including use of electronic charts, GPS, position fixing, tides, aids to navigation, pilotage, passage planning.
