RYA Yachtmaster Ocean

This course covers the specialist skills of navigating and skippering a vessel on an extended passage out of sight of land, and unravels the mysteries of astro navigation, using a sextant, ocean passage making, ocean currents, worldwide meteorology and electronic navigation aids.

Course type

This course will be run as a mixture of classroom (in Castle Donington) and online zoom sessions (for those unable to get to the classroom) on Tuesday evenings from 7pm-9pm, from November, these will be recorded so you can watch them at a later time. Some sea-going experience is desirable.

Navigation to Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore standard is a sensible pre-requisite for this course.

Successful students will be issued with an RYA ‘Yachtmaster Ocean Shorebased Course Completion Certificate’.

Equipment needed

In addition to the course fee (£350) an additional amount is payable for RYA course assessment pack (£50). You will also need chart plotting instruments which will be available for you to buy at the start of the course (£25).

Some syllabus headings

Meteorology: pressure and prevailing winds in the oceans, tropical revolving storms.

Navigation: sextant, understanding time zones, using the sun, moon, stars and planets to fix your position, checking your compass during an ocean cruise, using satellite navigation systems, passage planning.
