RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship
This course is an introduction to navigation and safety awareness for new or inexperienced skippers and crew, and those wanting to refresh their skills. The course is for anyone interested in sailing, motor boating, sea angling or diving, and works well in complementing the RYAs’ on-the-water training, such as the Powerboat Level 2, Start Yachting and Helmsman courses.
It’s a highly informative course with lots of opportunities for you to put your new found knowledge into practice. This is an online course with many interactive exercises to help reinforce the information and lots of chances to try out what you’ve learned
It provides basic seamanship and an introduction to navigation and meteorology.
Course type:
This is an RYA online course which will take around 16 hours to complete and you can work through this at your own pace, whenever and wherever you like. You are not on your own, you will have a Trent Sea Training tutor available to support you through this course. This is an ideal course for those with little or no experience, or some seagoing experience but no formal theory background. No pre-course knowledge is required.

Successful students will be issued with an RYA ‘Essential Navigation and Seamanship Course Completion Certificate’.

Equipment needed:
In addition to the course fee (£75) an additional amount (£25) is payable for RYA training charts, plotting equipment and the course assessment pack. Within the online course there is a small extract of the Training Almanac which you can view electronically, if you prefer you can also order a paper version of the full Training Almanac (£8.50).
Some syllabus headings:
- Seamanship: nautical terms, safety, engine checks, rules of the road, anchoring.
- Meteorology: weather forecasts, sources of information, using meteorology in passage planning.
- Navigation: chart work, electronic navigation, position fixing, tides, buoyage, pilotage, passage planning.
