RYA Ocean Yachtmaster Shorebased
This course covers the specialist skills of navigating and skippering a vessel on an extended passage out of sight of land, and covers Astro Navigation, Ocean Meteorology and Ocean Passage Planning.
Course type:
a night school class, Wednesday evening each week (1915 hours to 2145 hours) for 25 weeks, making a total of more than 62 hours of night classes. But you will need to do some homework as well!
Pre course experience:
Some sea going experience is desirable.
Pre course knowledge:
navigation to Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore standard is a sensible pre-requisite for this course.
Outcome:
successful students will be issued with an RYA 'Yachtmaster Ocean Shore based Course Completion Certificate'
Course Fee: £175 with an additional amount payable for RYA charts and course assessment pack.
Equipment:
You will also need chart plotting instruments and Training Almanac which will be available for you to buy at the start of the course.
Some Syllabus Headings:
Meteorology: Pressure and prevailing winds in the oceans, tropical revolving storms
Navigation: Sextant, Understanding time zones, using the sun stars and planets to fix your position, checking your compass during an ocean cruise, using satellite navigation systems, passage planning.
