RYA Day Skipper Shorebased
This course is an introduction to the theoretical skills needed to skipper a small craft. It provides Basic Seamanship and an introduction to Navigation and Meteorology. It is often the first course in the RYA National Cruising Scheme that people attempt.
Course type:
a night school class, Wednesday evening each week (1915 hours to 2145 hours) for 25 weeks, making a total of more than 62 hours of night classes. But you will need to do some homework as well!
Pre course experience:
ideal for those with little or no experience, or some seagoing experience but no formal theory background.

Course Fee: £175 with an additional amount payable for RYA charts and course assessment pack.
Equipment:
You will also need chart plotting instruments and a Training Almanac which will be available for you to buy at the start of the course.
Some Syllabus Headings:
Seamanship: Nautical terms, ropework, anchorwork, safety, Preventing Collisions at sea, avoiding pollution
Meteorology: Shipping forecast terms, sources of information, basic knowledge of pressure systems, using met in passage planning
Navigation: Chartwork including use of electronic charts, position fixing, tides, aids to navigation, passage planning, pilotage
