RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased

This course covers Offshore and Coastal Navigation, Seamanship and Meteorology and is for those wishing to explore the skills of skippering pleasure craft at sea.

Course type:
a night school class, Wednesday evening each week (1915 hours to 2145 hours) for 25 weeks, making a total of more than 62 hours of night classes. But you will need to do some homework as well!

Pre course experience:
some sea going experience is desirable

Pre course knowledge:
it is important that only those with theory up to the level of Day Skipper try to complete this course. Extensive practical experience may be a suitable substitute but most students without Day Skipper theory will struggle with this advanced course. The biggest mistake made by students is enrolling on this course without suitable pre-course knowledge.

Outcome:
successful students will be issued with an RYA 'Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore Shore based Course Completion Certificate'

Course Fee: £175 with an additional amount payable for RYA charts and course assessment pack.

Equipment:
You will also need chart plotting instruments and a Training Almanac which will be available for you to buy at the start of the course.
Some Syllabus Headings:

Seamanship: Anchoring, Rule of the Road, Safety at Sea, Signals

Meteorology: Air masses ,cloud types, frontal systems, local weather forecasting, interpreting a weather forecast

Navigation: Chartwork including use of electronic charts, Tides, Ships compass, Aids to navigation, satellite navigation systems, pilotage, log keeping, passage planning
